ABA Reaches Consensus With CMBA and EYBA on Youth Provincials Eligibility

Jan. 23, 2024

The Alberta Basketball Association (ABA), Calgary Minor Basketball Association (CMBA) and Edmonton Youth Basketball Association (EYBA) have reached consensus on eligibility requirements for participation in Youth Provincials beginning with the 2025 edition of the annual tournament.

Effective as of the 2024-2025 membership year, an organization and all of its teams must be members in good standing with ABA in order for any of the organization’s teams to be allowed to take part in Youth Provincials.

“I'm really excited that we got both of those major stakeholders at the table to get to an agreement on eligibility moving forward,” says Dave Drabiuk, ABA Executive Director. “It helps strengthen our governance in the province and ensure that our competition model stays consistent and stays in the best interests of the athletes.”

One of the most anticipated events in the basketball community each year, Youth Provincials brings together teams from across the province every March. The annual tournament provides opportunity for youth to compete, collaborate, and demonstrate their skills, while fostering a sense of achievement and camaraderie.

In 2023, Youth Provincials comprised 142 teams totalling over 1,700 players and more than 280 coaches. A total of 238 games were contested, with the officiating of 235 referees. The 2025 edition of the tournament will coincide with ABA’s 50th anniversary.

This year’s Youth Provincials are set for March 8 and 9 in Edmonton. Full details can be found on the tournament page.
