Jan. 18, 2023

ABA (Alberta Basketball Association) alumnae Yvonne Ejim of the Gonzaga Bulldogs is one of 15 players in NCAA Division 1 women’s basketball named to the 2023 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award Midseason Watch List, announced on Wednesday (Jan. 18).

The junior forward from Calgary leads Gonzaga in 2022-23 with averages of 16.1 points per game, 8.2 rebounds per game, and 1.0 blocks per game. She has five games scoring at least 20 points, including a career high 32 against Queens on Dec. 6, and recorded three double-doubles. Ejim has twice been named West Coast Conference Player of the Week this season.

“There was a never a question of if Yvonne Ejim would have a great NCAA career, and she has risen to the elite level in the game,” says Paul Sir, ABA Executive Director. “Being included on the Becky Hammon Award Midseason Watch List is a fitting tribute to someone who has all of the ingredients for greatness both on and off the court. ABA is proud of Yvonne and humbled to have been a part of her developmental journey.”

Ejim was part of Team Alberta at the Basketball Canada National Championships in 2016 (U15), 2018 and 2019 (U17), and represented her province at the 2017 Canada Summer Games.

Ten semi-finalists for the 2023 Becky Hammon Award will be announced in February, with five finalists being announced in early March. The winner will be announced in late March.
