Alberta Athletes Shine in Championship Victories at GLOBL Jam

Jul. 11, 2022

Alberta Basketball Association (ABA) alumni shone at the inaugural GLOBL Jam, which wrapped up on the weekend after several fantastic days of elite international basketball competition in Toronto.

The Canadian U23 women’s team, which featured Yvonne Ejim (Calgary) and Phillipina Kyei (Calgary) defeated France 78-60 in the GLOBL Jam Fives women’s championship final at Mattamy Athletic Centre on Sunday (July 10) afternoon.

Less than 24 hours earlier, outside on Toronto’s famous Dundas Street, Team Alberta beat Team Manitoba 19-2 on Saturday (July 9) in the championship game of FIBA 3x3 Canada Quest National Final. Alberta’s lineup includes Kacie Bosch (Lethbridge), Katherine Plouffe (Edmonton), Michelle Plouffe (Edmonton).

Canada’s U23 team went undefeated in the women’s tournament, posting a 5-0 record. Ejim and Kyei were top two for rebounds in both Canada’s 85-60 semi-final win over the United States (13 rebounds apiece), as well as the gold medal victory over France (8 boards for Ejim, 7 for Kyei). For the tournament, Ejim averaged 7.4 boards and Kyei grabbed 6.6 rebounds per game, second and third most on Team Canada.

The outstanding showing in Canada Quest by the 3x3 team representing Alberta served as a great tune-up for the upcoming FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series event in Edmonton on July 30-31, when the foursome of Bosch, Michelle and Katherine Plouffe, and Paige Crozon will represent Canada against the world’s top national teams.

'The Alberta Basketball Association congratulates the great performances by our Alberta athletes and their gold medal performances at GLOBL Jam,” says Paul Sir, ABA Executive Director.

“Yvonne and Phillipina being part of the five-on-five championship win over France was inspired, and the 3x3 Team Alberta women's absolute dominance, while no surprise, shows why they are among the teams in the world. We can't wait for them to play in Edmonton at the end of the month”
