Sunday, June 7, 2026

Albertans Deng Ngor (Grande Prairie) and Nathan Yambayamba (Edmonton) helped Canada to a historic 67-65 victory over the United States in the final of the 2026 FIBA U18 AmeriCup in Leon, Mexico, on Sunday night.

Canada captures gold for the first time ever in the biannual event, which was first contested in 1990 as the FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship. The win is also Canada’s first ever over the United States at the U18 level.

Ngor scored 15 points on Sunday, including the game-winning bucket to break a 65-65 tie with just over one minute remaining.

Over the course of competition, Ngor averaged 10.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists, while Yambayamba averaged 8.0 points, 2.0 boards and 1.0 assists.

Ngor and Yambayamba were part of the roster that captured Alberta’s first ever gold in men’s hoops at the Canada Summer Games last year.
