Saturday, March 7, 2026

Team Alberta North is set to go for hoops gold at the Arctic Winter Games 2026 in Whitehorse, Yukon. Basketball competition at the multisport cultural event begins Sunday (March 8) and runs through Friday (March 13).

Team Alberta North’s female and male basketball rosters feature athletes from several northern cities and towns, including Beaverlodge, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, High Level and Valleyview.

The Arctic Winter Games represents one of the largest multisport cultural events in the circumpolar North, with approximately 2,000 participants.

At the 2023 Arctic Winter Games, which took place in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Team Alberta North captured gold in female basketball and silver in male basketball.

“It’s exciting to see Team Alberta North basketball back at the Arctic Winter Games,” says Team Alberta North basketball coach Wayne Dunnington.

“Since the 2023 Games in Fort McMurray, there has been a strong commitment to ensuring northern athletes continue to have this opportunity with the great game of basketball,” Dunnington continues.

“This group represents the North with pride, unity, and discipline, and the experience of competing at the Games will stay with them for a lifetime.”
