To be eligible for nomination to the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame, candidates must meet the following criteria. This comprehensive set of criteria ensures nominees to the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame reflect excellence, dedication, and a profound connection to Alberta basketball.
General Eligibility
Residency in Alberta
- Nominees must have had permanent residency in Alberta during the relevant part of their basketball career.
- They must have developed their basketball skills to a national or international standard while residing in Alberta. Nominees may have later moved elsewhere during their career but must have achieved greatness with their foundation established in Alberta.
Connection to Canada
- Nominees must be Canadian citizens, residents of Canada for a minimum of three years, or born in Canada.
- They may also qualify if they made a distinguished contribution to the game of basketball in Canada.
- If applicable, nominees must have represented Canada internationally and not another country.
Exclusions
- Nominees are ineligible if they lived in Alberta but left the province before developing their skills to a national or international standard.
- Temporary residents who trained in Alberta but maintained permanent residency elsewhere are not eligible.
Impact and Contributions
Significant Contributions
- Nominees must have made a significant impact on basketball as an Alberta resident, with at least five years of residency in the province.
- Their contributions should extend to Alberta basketball or the sport nationally or internationally.
Achievements and Recognition
- Exceptional personal, team, or professional accomplishments in basketball will be considered.
- Achievements must demonstrate a significant impact at the provincial, national, or international levels.
- Recognition such as induction into other Halls of Fame (e.g., Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, Basketball Hall of Fame) or the receipt of major awards or championships enhances a nominee’s eligibility.
Teams and Groups
- Teams or groups may be nominated if they achieved significant results at the national or international levels or made a notable impact on basketball within Alberta under exceptional circumstances.
Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame Eligibility Criteria for Players/Athletes
To be eligible for nomination to the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame, players or athletes must meet the following criteria. This eligibility framework ensures that nominees for the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame are celebrated for their athletic excellence, character, and meaningful contributions to basketball in Alberta and beyond.
Retirement Status
Retirement Period/Age Threshold
- Players must be retired from their highest level of competition (e.g., National Team, NBA/WNBA, CEBL, U Sports) for a minimum of 4 full years before being eligible for nomination OR be over the age of 32 in their first year of nomination to the Hall of Fame.
- If a player briefly comes out of retirement, their eligibility will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Contributions and Achievements
Performance and Impact
- Players must have consistently performed at a high level on provincial, university, national, or professional teams, achieving notable accomplishments such as:
- All-Canadian selections or National Tournament All-Star selections.
- Participation on national teams or other recognized achievements in elite competitions.
- Personal achievements, awards, and recognitions are evaluated alongside contributions to their community, Alberta basketball, and the sport across Canada.
Character and Integrity
- Nominees must be individuals of good character, demonstrating integrity, sportsmanship, and a positive impact on the game of basketball.
- Consideration is given to the player’s overall contribution to their teams and the broader basketball community.
Connection to Alberta
Residency and Development
- Eligible players must have played a significant portion of their career in Alberta or have developed their skills within the province, achieving excellence at a provincial, national, or international level.
Considerations in Voting
- Voting for players must be based on the player’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contribution to the teams on which the player participated.
- The player’s overall contribution to the game of basketball in general must also be considered.
Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame Eligibility Criteria for Coaches
To be eligible for nomination to the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame, coaches must meet the following criteria. This comprehensive framework ensures nominees for the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame represent excellence, dedication, and meaningful contributions to the development of basketball in Alberta and beyond.
Coaching Tenure and Retirement Status
Experience
- Coaches must have either:
- Coached actively at the high school, college, or professional level for at least 15 years, or
- Been fully retired from coaching for at least four full seasons to be eligible in their sixth year of retirement.
Extended Active Coaching
- Coaches who remain active must have coached as a full-time assistant or head coach for a minimum of 25 years to be eligible for consideration in their 26th year of active coaching.
Contributions and Achievements
Leadership and Impact
- Coaches must have demonstrated exceptional leadership in guiding athletes and teams, contributing significantly to the development and success of basketball in Alberta and beyond.
- Evaluation will consider personal achievements, awards, and accomplishments, as well as the coach’s contributions to their community, Alberta basketball, and the sport at national and international levels.

Volunteer vs. Paid Roles
- Contributions as a volunteer versus those in paid positions will be taken into account during evaluation.

- Voting for coaches must be based on their team’s record(s), coaching/teaching ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contribution to their respective leagues.
- The coach’s overall contribution to the game of basketball in general must also be considered.
Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame Eligibility Criteria for Officials
To be eligible for nomination to the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame, officials must meet the following criteria. This framework ensures nominees for the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame reflect dedication, excellence, and a meaningful contribution to basketball officiating in Alberta and beyond.
Officiating Tenure and Retirement Status

To be eligible for nomination to the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame, sports builders must meet the following criteria. This eligibility framework ensures that builders nominated to the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame are recognized for their exceptional leadership, dedication, and meaningful impact on the development of basketball in Alberta and beyond.
Contributions to Basketball
Significant Contributions
- Builders are eligible for nomination at any time based on their significant and sustained contributions to the game of basketball.
- Contributions may include roles as a coach, trainer, manager, official, administrator, volunteer, media member or facility/program developer.
Evaluation Criteria
- Nominees will be evaluated based on their outstanding effort in advancing basketball, normally over a period of at least ten years (not necessarily consecutive).
- Consideration will be given to the personal achievements, awards, or accomplishments of the nominee, as well as their broader impact on basketball in their community, in Alberta, and across Canada.
Role in the Community and Beyond
Volunteer vs. Paid Roles
- The nature of the nominee’s contributions, whether as a volunteer or in a paid administrative position, will be a factor in the evaluation process.

Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame Eligibility Criteria for Teams
To be eligible for nomination to the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame, teams must meet the following criteria:. This criteria ensures that teams recognized in the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame exemplify excellence, represent Alberta with distinction, and have made a lasting impact on basketball at the provincial and national levels.
Team Composition and Representation
Canadian Athletes in Alberta
- Teams must consist primarily of Canadian athletes living in Alberta during the time of their achievement.
- The team must have represented an Alberta or Canadian organization or corporation.
Achievements and Impact
Significant Results
- Teams must have achieved outstanding or extraordinary results that brought prominence to the sport of basketball in Alberta and Canada.
Timeframe for Eligibility
Milestone Removal
- Teams must be at least five years removed from the milestone or achievement being considered for nomination.
Considerations in Voting
- Voting for teams must be based on their ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contribution to their respective leagues.
- The team’s overall contribution to the game of basketball in general must also be considered.
Preamble & Instructions
The Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame is one of the highest honours that can be bestowed upon an individual or team, active or retired, for significant contribution(s) or accomplishment(s) through basketball in Alberta.
Once nominated, nominees remain eligible for induction into the Hall in each subsequent year. Selection of inductees will be done annually by the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
NOMINATION CATEGORIES
There are five (5) categories by which an individual or team can be nominated and considered based on their relevance to the listed nomination criteria:
- Athlete
- Builder
- Coach
- Official
- Team
SUBMITTING A NOMINATION
Nomination forms must be submitted in full and all supplementary information be included and received at the Alberta Basketball Association office in order to be considered for induction in the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame in that given year. All nomination form information will be held in the strictest of confidence and not shared or transferred with another party other than the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame Selection Committee without written consent of the applicant.
HELPFUL TIPS IN SUBMITTING A NOMINATION
Assume the Committee does not know the nominee or anything about their contributions to Basketball. In your answers, tell us everything we need to know to evaluate the nominee.
The Committee will rely on your examples to appreciate the strength of your nominee’s contributions. Try to use specific examples to show why your nominee deserves this recognition - speak from your heart.
Remember that the Committee receives many nominations, but will only be able to recognize a limited number in each year's Induction Class. Highlight what makes your nominee stand out above other nominees.
Describe the nominee and their contribution succinctly and accurately. Provide the necessary details and examples that show the significance of their contribution and dedication to the sport.
You may nominate more than one individual or team. Please complete a separate nomination for each nominee.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION
The deadline to submit completed applications is February 28th. While Nominations can be made throughout the year, they will be reviewed each March with Inductions being confirmed in April and public announcement occurring between May-June of each year with the Inductees being formally recognized in September at the annual Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame Gala.
SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION
If the nominee is selected to enter the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame the following will be required to be submitted on their behalf:
Two (2) portrait or team photos sent electronically via e-mail. Must be a high resolution photo for duplication where possible. (Old photos can be scanned at a high level resolution)
Memorabilia from the team or individuals’ history or involvement in the game. This can include awards, plaques, pictures, equipment, jackets, jerseys, medals, etc. These items will be given to the ABA on loan for one year to display and will be returned the following season.
