Alberta Basketball Association (ABA) alumnus Nate Petrone of the Calgary Dinos was on May 15 named the 2024-25 Canada West male Athlete of the Year. The Calgarian now moves forward as the Canada West nominee for the U Sports male Athlete of the Year award, which will be announced on June 2.

In March, Petrone helped the Dinos win the Canada West men’s basketball championship. During the regular season, he led Canada West with an average of 24.2 points per game while shooting 56.8% on field goals. He was named the 2025 recipient of the Mike Moser Memorial Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player in U Sports men’s basketball.
Petrone represented Alberta at the 2017 Canada Basketball 17U Boys National Championships.
