Arctic Winter Games Head Coaches Selected

I am a passionate basketball coach with a love for northern living. I grew up in Northern Ontario and was fortunate to spend my childhood playing high level basketball despite living in a remote location. I spend every day trying to bring that same level of competition and northern pride to the next generation of basketball players. 

I am a head coach along with handling scheduling and logistics for Northern Trailblazers Basketball, a Fort McMurray-based club whose programming rivals that of any major city. I am also involved in ASAA competition as a head coach at École McTavish, where I lead the varsity and two junior high girl’s programs. 

I am excited for the opportunity to build a team to represent Alberta North and to play in front of hometown crowds at the 2023 Arctic Winter Games.

Coach Wayne Dunnington: 

I've been coaching basketball for approximately two decades; my primary focus has been on high school senior boys basketball, but I've worked with girls and boys programs ranging from junior to senior high. I've been the president and head coach of the Peace River Warriors Basketball club basketball program since 2014, which has 175 participants each year. I recently served as an apprentice coach for the Alberta 18U Men's team that competed in this year’s Canada Summer Games. In terms of certification, I have recently completed my training for the NCCP Train to Compete program. I also provide a unique perspective that I can incorporate into my coaching as an ABOA official.

As a player, a parent, a spectator, the founder of a club, an official, and a coach, I've seen the game through many different lenses. Each of these offers me unique learning experiences that enable me to be the coach and person I am today.
