Alberta wins gold at Canada Summer Games

Aug. 13, 2022

Team Alberta is the 2022 Canada Summer Games female basketball champion after defeating Saskatchewan 71-60 in the gold medal game at the Meridian Centre in Niagara, Ont., on Saturday.

The championship triumph is the second all-time for Alberta in basketball competition at the Canada Games, following a gold medal for the female team in 2009. Alberta has now won a medal in either male or female hoops competition at six of the last seven Canada Summer Games.

Alberta’s female team had a perfect 5-0 record at the Games. After finishing first in their preliminary group with a 2-0 mark, the team defeated Manitoba 94-80 in the quarterfinals, then knocked off the host Ontario team 80-71 in the semis.

Saturday’s medal wraps up a fantastic summer of national competition for Alberta’s provincial basketball teams, beginning two weeks ago with the Canada Basketball 17U and 15U boys and girls National Championships. All four Alberta teams reached the National Championships semi-finals, with the 15U boys and 17U girls each winning bronze.

Alberta’s male team also reached the semi-finals at the Canada Summer Games, making it six-for-six that the provincial squads placed in the top four this summer. Alberta was defeated 90-83 by Nova Scotia in the male basketball bronze medal game on Saturday.
